Eight hundred years after the sonnet’s invention, this book celebrates its development in the hands of American poets—from traditional to experimental, political, and personal.

Poetry anthologies present specific design challenges. Sonneteers’ poems adhere with the overall design while also retaining the typographic integrity of their original publications. Commentary, source notes, citations, and longer essays integrate peripherally without overshadowing the main sonnets. As Part I (Poems) progresses, the number of visually irregular and experimental poems increases. The design is quietly flexible, bending in places while holding together as one book.
